Benefit advice/assistance for Father and Grandmother pls

Hi all, I am posting here on behalf of my Father and Grandmother. I am hoping someone could assist.

I know they need to speak to someone so are off to see CAB but cant get in for almost 2 weeks, and have booked an app at DWP but thats not til next week either.

Situ is...my Mother and Father have decided to seperate after 40 odd years. Initially my Father wanted my Mother to leave but has today said he MAY move out to stay with my Grandmother for a short period of time until they can sell their home etc

Anyway, Grandmother gets her state pension and pension credits winter fuel payment etc and gets her council tax and most of her rent paid for her. My Father is unfortunately on DLA and gets a work pension of £800 pcm after being forced to finish work due to illness.

How will my Grandmothers penison and housing be effected?

My Father is happy to move in with her short term as my Aunty is having to go and see my Grandmorther everyday - just for company really as she is lonely and isolated. By my Father moving in it will ease my Aunts 'burden' and seeing as my Grandmorther is as fit as a fiddle she is capable (and very willing) to assist my Father with his care needs in the short term, she sees it as company for her as well.

But, he is reluctant to move in if it will impact her pension, housing etc as he only plans on being there on a temp basis (the house officially goes on the market later in the week once they have been in to sign all the contacts but the estate agent already has 4 ppl wanting to view). They are holding off signing anything as of yet as the next door neighbours Daughter has been looking in the area for months and has already approached them with a private offer at only £10k less than what the estate agent valued it at- so as you can see it could literally be 6-8 weeks he would be with my Grandmother - hence reluctance to 'mess up' anything for her.

Could anyone advise what Grandmother may loose, or have to change?

I know they need to seek definative advice, and as already stated they are doing so with appointments booked for the coming 14 days, I thought I would ask as there are some vary knowledgeable folk on here so at least they could get 'an idea' if it is viable or not

Thank you for any comments/advice

when i enquired about a similar situation just the other way round ie i received housing benefit etc and my mum was going to move in with me, i was told as my mum was in receipt of a disablity benefit as well and her pension(an amount that meant she could only claim a small amount of housing benefit) her income wasn't counted and would therefore not affect my benefits at all, i will try to find the info online as i know i have read it some where online too HTH

it will depend on weather your gran receives AA/dla. If she does, she may be in receipt, on Pension Credit, a premium called severe disablement premium. this is awarded on the basis that she lives alone. if your father moves in and cannot be ignored for this purpose then she would lose the premium until such time he leaves the household. this would have a knock on effect of Housing and council tax if at present with the premium she receives the Guaranteed element and this then knocks her down to savings credit onlyYou state your father gets DLA is any element the MR/HR of the care component, if he does then they may be able to "ignore" his presence in the house. If she is not receipt of AA/dla then there would be no change to any of her entitlements.
  • My Grandmother doesnt get AA/DLA She gets her state pension credits, a small - very, very small (few £'s a week) private pension and her winter fuel allowance. My Father gets the highest rates available for his DLA for mobility and care (they are the 2 components arent they?)

thats great, thanks so much. I feared the worst - although i know little, if anything regarding the benefits system.

They have been worried that the process would become complex and would end up with my Grandmother being in a muddle when he left, But, from the sounds of it nothing will change.

Thanks again, i will let them know.

TAZ, if you come accross the info please let me know then i can print it off and show them.
