Also 1899 would be slightly cheaper for calls to Geographical Numbers still 1p a minute via freephone access number, but 3p connection as opposed to 18185 4p.

I just rang the Telewest helpline and they told me clearly that there is a connection fee, even for a freephone number  So the connection fee for Telewest users to call18185 is 10p in total, 6p to Telewest and 4p to call18185. That makes call18185 fairly uneconomical for short calls.

I'd phone them back then, because whoever you spoke to is wrong. You are NOT charged for calls to 0808 numbers.

Thanks for that. I'd forgotten about their connection fee was 1p different. I have amended my post (#4) accordingly.

I really hope that's true, but I rang the Telewest helpline 5 minutes ago and specifically asked "is there a connection fee for freephone numbers" and was told that, yes there is
I agree with c_smith and ask them again. If they charged a connection fee for calls to freephone numbers then they would be the only landline provider to do so and they would probably lose loads more customers. Also, it would have been noticed by other TW/NTL's customers and posted here.

As I said in an earlier post, its not uncommon to get wrong information from these people due to lack of training/knowledge.

Useful if slightly out of date info on cheaper calls from Cable.

Believe me a lot of people use some of these services on cable via the 0800 access numbers,or an auto dialer /smart box programed with an 0800 access number, and the Cable Companies dont charge a connection fee.
  • OK I just rang back again to Telewest and spoke to someone who seemed to know more what they are talking about. And as previous posters said, there is no connection fee on Telewest for non-chargeable calls such as freephone numbers. Good news!
