Amex is great, it's jsut a shame it isn't universally accepted.
It depends on where you shop, but a lot of discount on-line retailers don't take it.0 -

Agreed, I find it great for most restaurants, petrol stations and the tube. Mine has only ever been declined once.
For on line retail then I'd use my 02 money card

Just been juggling a few balance on my Egg Money card.
It's been in credit for a while from recent stoozing. Spent some money to work up cashback and ended up with debit balance.
Tried to make a 2k payment to put account back in credit again so I could spend more as part of my general plan to max out the cashback.
Damn thing wouldn't let me make an overpayment. That's definitely a first - have been doing this for years ... only lets me pay the debit balance ....
So what I did instead was to pay the debit balance repeatedly
A bit slower maybe to process multiple £300 tramsactions rather than a simple £3000 payment, but still lets me achieve the same ...
From what I'm seeing, they'll process the multiple payments and put my account in credit - sending a secure message to Egg to ask them !!!!!! is going on.
EDIT: Update - Egg have confirmed by secure message that from 30/04/10 they no longer allow you to make overpayments to your account - in their wisdom they don't deem this to be a change of terms and conditions so insist that they do not need to notify you of this. Making overpayments has been the standard way to put the card in credit to allow you to make purchases greater than their usual abysmal credit limits - seems they're now preventing you from doing this. I used to work for Egg replying to secure messages. At one time it was all done by staff at the base in Brierley Hill / Dudley (now closed).
Around the same time that Citi took over a couple of teams based in Derby also started to reply to secure messages. The vast majority were fine but from then on nearly every day I was guaranteed to get a follow on query from a customer who had received a reply that didn't make sense (and nine times out of ten it was the same guy from Derby who didn't have a clue what he was on about).
I wouldn't be surprised if some of them were dealt with abroad now. Around a year afterI was made redundant from Egg (when the Brierley Hill base was closed) I had to send in a secure message to them. I got a reply stating that what I had asked them to do wasn't possible, I had to reply and tell them they were wrong. :doh:
Standards do seem to have slipped a bit, and not just with the quality of the replies. For example, we were targeted to get all messages replied to within 24 hours, the last time I sent a message online I think it stated to expect a reply within 3 days. :think:0 -
This is what happens when companies outsource to the Indian continent and or downsize the operation without the correct training - welcome to not so Great Britain, pro-immigration, cheap foreign workers, bean counters without concept of business operation as long as their books look good - hey lets save a couple of million per year and sack 100 call centre staff who have all of the business knowledge and then outsource to a bunch of script-reading automatons’ in Bangalore!Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? So let me get this straight.
Is Egg refusing to allow any positive balances when using their own online banking and trying to overpay from there only.
Or if you make a balance transfer from say Santander to the Egg Money card, will this be OK still, or will this be returned (if it puts you positive) and get a 3% charge as well.
The reason I am asking is that my friend is just about to do this with his new Santander card.0 -

I guess part of the reason is that it costs them to take a debit card payment, but doesn't to receive a bank transfer, so that would explain them removing overpayments by card?0 -

Wouldn't have thought so, any costs would be the same regardless of the value of the payment.
Although it does make me consider how many £1 payments I can be bothered to do to rack up their costs
