Choosing a share dealing service

I'm looking to buy some shares for the first time and am looking to open a share dealing account. Could anyone tell me what I should be looking for in an account?

Anyone already have an account they like and why would you recommend it?

I've used iii, Halifax and Selftrade. I couldn't recommend Selftrade, personally, as I'm moving from them due to service issues. I'm happy with iii and would personally recommend them to others, for share purchases. Their charges are competitive (for the amounts I deal with), and their platform is easy to use. It's very similar to my Halifax one, with some slight variations due to the difference in the accounts.

I was with Selftrade for years & very happy too but then they were taken over, refused to answer emails, wanted me to re-register & send proof of existence, changed their website & increased their charges so I left & transferred to my other online dealer iDealing who are excellent.
Also Hargreaves & Lansdown & a traditional non-online broker who is a personal friend but I do not use as he charges too much.
