HBoS Group transfers

Has anyone managed to transfer card balances from one Halifax/Bank of Scotland card to another or been declined? I am advising two different mates with two different sets of debts...

What I would like to see them do is

1. Transfer from Intelligent Finance card to Union Card eg ASLEF platinum (0% 9 months, no BT fee) - would this be allowed?

2. Transfer from Bank of Scotland Classic card to Intelligent Finance LOB card (4.95% LOB, no fee) or Sainsbury's Platinum card(5.9% LOB, no fee) again, would this be allowed?

Any experiences?

Not allowed. All the HBOS cards have conditions that state you cannot transfer balances between HBOS cards.

It's been reported on these boards that, due to a 'loose' tie-up, some people have been able to BT to/from* Sainsbury's Bank cards.

However, if the BT is important, I personally wouldn't risk it and consider something else instead.

    * I can't remember which way the balance went.

Sainsburys Bank is a joint venture between HBOS and Sainsburys. This makes it slightly different to the other partner and affinity brands that HBOS issue cards for.
The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts.
  • I can confirm you can do a transfer from any HBOS card to a Sainsburys card, and vice versa.

I did this. I wanted to close my Halifax Cancer Research Card (the interest was shocking!) and move to a BOS Macmillan card with 9 months 0% BT and New purchases (this was in May). To succeed in this I BT'd to my other CC (a Smile card) and then straight on again to the new BOS card when it came. Worked like a dream.

  • Some of the Halifax branded cards have been sold to MBNA - I suppose you could now (one of the charity ones)
  • Also Halifax does not allow transfer balance to Egg as well....

I think you've misread that news release.

Firstly, it's over 4 years old.

    Secondly, it's a 2 part press release...

The first part warns that people looking to shift their balances should be aware that many of the card providers are linked by the people that run their credit cards (MBNA & HBoS in particular) - and as such they may find that once they have the card they can't do anything with it.

The second part is an announcement that Egg are about to launch a 6 month 0% BT & purchases card. By pure chance  it's not affiliated to any of the (then) major players.

So, a clever piece of marketing...don't gamble with your next BT card application - transfer your balance to Egg instead!!!
