Problem with signal on Ford Mondeo radio

For about a year now we only get really intermittent reception on the car stereo on an 02 ford mondeo with it's original stereo. Not the end of the world I know, but it also means we can't use the iPod though the transmitter either as that relies on a radio signal. We get a minute or 2 if we're lucky then it goes really crackly.

A friend suggested it may be erosion on the aerial- what i was wondering is- A) how do we remove it to check and where can we get a new aerial if that is the case and C) any clues as to what else could be causing it?

Obviously don't want to go to Ford as they'll charge stupid money. (They wanted to charge us £200 when we locked ourselves out of the radio when we first bought the car- after a quick online search we managed to unlock it free)

If it is the front roof aerial remove the interior light and the bolt is under there. Remove the aerial and clean up around the hole and refit. This is a very common ford problem.

I used to get the same problem on my earlier mondeo (same Ariel) I replaced it with a new one which was about a tenner and all sorted.
