Have successfully transferred all my old mail over, but am still not able to send and receive.
It's probably dead simple, but what do I enter in the incoming and outgoing mail server boxes? I have a btinternet.com address.
I obviously did it right on my old PC but can't recall what went where.
Many thanks for any help.

Enter
mail.btinternet.com
in both the pop3 and smtp boxes.
(at least I think that's right...don't use bt mail myself!)0 -
Tried that, but received this when I tried to send and receive:
"Unable to logon to the server using Secure Password Authentication. Account: 'mail.btinternet.com', Server: 'mail.btinternet.com', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR popgate unknown command', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC18"
Thanks anyway. Any other ideas?0 -
Are you using Outlook Express?
If so, select your mail account - click properties - then try placing a tick in the box entitled 'my server requires authentication' on the 'servers' tab.
If that fails...try ticking the two boxes entitled 'this server requires a secure connection (ssl)' for both smtp & pop3 on the 'advanced' tab.
Sorry if neither of these work for you. I'm having to guess at solutions.
Someone with more knowledge of bt mail will no doubt have the definitive answer!

Still no joy, I'm afraid. Got the same error message as before.0

I'm a total technophobe and although I did succesfully use incoming and outgoing mail in OE, I changed it so it would use Yahoo mail.
Lost the ability to mail via OE  , but I can get incoming mail. Just had a look and it says on here:
pop.mail.yahoo.co.uk
would yours be pop.mail.btinternet.com?0 -
The correct setting for both POP3 (incoming) and SMTP (outgoing) mail servers is mail.btinternet.com as stated above.
BTinternet mail does NOT use secure password authentication, so ensure that that box is UNticked.
BTinternet mail DOES require authentication, so ensure that on the 'Servers' page of the account properties, under 'Outgoing Mail Server', the requires authentication box is ticked.
After ticking that option, click on the 'Settings' button to the right and ensure that 'use same settings as my incoming mail server' is ticked. Then click OK.
Back in the Properties window, click on the 'Advanced' tab. Change the server timeouts value from 1 minute to 4 minutes 30 seconds. Click on OK,
Click on OK/Close to find your way back to Outlook. Your account setting should now be correctly configured.
If you still have problems connecting to the BTinternet mail server, the most likely cause is an error in the username/password you have supplied.

Hi LincsLad, did I get part of that right? lol
Sorry if I briefly hijack this thread but if I follow those instructions you've given to backbiter, would it work for me too but via Yahoo do you know please?
Thanks0 -
Check out this link for how to do the same for Yahoo mail. (It saves me typing or cut/pasting reams of info here
)

Thanks Lincslad. That was a top answer - it's all working fine now.0
