in Credit cards
Hello guys, sorry I wasn't too sure where to post this message and seeing as it is a credit card I want, i figured I'd post it here
Here goes.....
I was with my ex for 16 years (since school), I'm 31 now and I've never had any kind of credit before, EVERYTHING was in her name.
So I am now having to build a credit file, most banks will only give me a basic bank account with NO debit card and they don't even report to the CRA's.
So, could someone please tell me how to start building my credit file, i have looked at the CAPITAL ONE secured card, but because of the split, I can't really afford the 200 pound fee at the moment.
I do work but am currently off sick, claiming incapacity benefit (due to depression from the split and loss of my child)
I am egar to get my life sorted again and I could really do with some advice on starting my credit file.
I don't have bad credit OR good credit as I have NEVER had any kind of credit.
I have ID in my new address (I'm staying with my sister).
I also tried to get myslef put on the electoral roll but they aren't adding anyone until dec/jan.
So any advice at all would be great.
Ps, my bank account was joint and now that has been put on hold by my ex so I don't even have a bank. I would really like a bank account with a debit card.
Thank you
Matt

To be perfectly honest, if you are on long term sick at the moment then you will be much better off sorting yourself out and getting back into work before the temptations of having credit. Once you are back at work, have yourself on the electrol roll and have been at the new address for a longer time you will represent a better credit riskAll posts made are simply my own opinions and are neither professional advice nor the opinions of my employers

I'm not long term sick, I'm just off for another month! Then I plan to get back to work.
To be honest, I don't really want credit as such, I just need to open a decent banl account (as I don't have one now) and I need to get a mobile phone (non pay as you go) that in itself isn't a proble, as 3 will give me one but they require a bank account and debit card as security check.
So what I really wantto know is how to start building my credit file so I can get a decent bank account.
Thanks

Is there some reason why you can't ask your old joint account provider to now give you an account of your own?0

I thought of that, but the seperation wasn't a nice one and she put a block on the joint account so I can't use it! Nastwest won't open another account for me until she sorts that accunt out!
Basically, I need to open another account but with ABSOLUTELY no credit on my file, it looks like all I'm gonna be able to get is a very BASIC account with just an ATM card!
Any ideas anyone?

well, try ask for a step account, this is usually given to under 18's kids with no credit history, and i think you only need £1 deposite to open it. I did mine at Natwest while i had no credit history but since you have a bit problem with them then try ask other banks,I'm sure they are doing it too. Or maybe go to the bank while your relative's been there a long time and get them to be your reference. try it, mate. i'm sure it's not that bad to get a bank account.good luck.0

The best thing for you to do, and i know you dont want to is to open up a basic account, i work for a really large bank, and we have customers in your situation, no credit file etc and we try process an account for them. How many and what banks have you tried, have they actually processed the account for you?
With my bank, when we open up basics (as long as it wasnt for bad credit reasons) we can generally upgrade the account in 3 months. True the accounts do not report on the CRA's but they do on the banks records, you be good with the account, the bank will upgrade you. It'll be the quickest, although granted not the best at the mo, but if your waiting till Dec to get on the V Roll, you could have had a basic and possible upgrade by November so its worth a try!0
