Cancelling flight due to baggage restrictions?

Hi - I'm wondering how I would stand if the current carry-on restrictions are maintained and I want to cancel my flight as a consequence - would I get a refund or not?

My situation is that I'm flying with Jet2 next month and I would be taking about £2500 worth of camera/pc equipment that wouldn't be covered by my insurance if it was nicked from hold baggage. If the current situation continues I won't be travelling for that reason. Will Jet2 laugh in my face if I ask for a refund?

I think they will say 'it is next month let's wait and see' if you ask for a refund now.

Hi - apart from general household and travel insurance, the camera equipement and computer equipment are each insured separately; all of the above policies exclude theft from hold luggage but thanks for the advice.

I'm not going to make any contact with Jet2 until september but I do need to allow sufficient time to cancel my accommodation without incurring a charge.

    Hi,
Speciliast Insurers, packed properly you should have no problems.
Bands,TV crews etc all Hold Store when flying .
Make sure you catalog the contents of case and make carrier aware of Fragile Equipment.
    Google for specialist insurers.
    Heres one found earlier http://www.eandl.co.uk/insurance/photo
Worldwide all risk = aprox £90
You could also get one off return insurance for very little.
    Happy Hols

Thanks Barron - although I wouldn't go with EandL, as they have a poor reputation among phographers - my policy with Photoguard is simmilarly worded; I'll have have a look for one-off all risks insurance - thanks.

It may be worth looking at shipping it seperatley using DHL or Fedex, they can carry delicate equipment and can also be fully insured as part fo the carriage arraingment.

For anyone interested in this, I just got a quote for DHL. For up to 6kg, in one package, with an insured value of 3000, to Australia (so, in theory I'd presume that the rest of the world would be cheaper), on a 3 day express service costs 174.95.
Downside is, the package will be halted at customs, and as the lovely lady at DHL said (call them for a quote, they really are nice), it will most likely incur import tax too. Not sure about this, or how much it might be, the best people to speak to are customs and excise at your destination.

Thanks Amys And Softstuff - just had and interesting talk with EandL about their camera insurance; while not explicit in their policy wording it didn't cover transport in hold baggage until today.

They've made a decision to cover photography equipment in this new circumstance so I'm going to go back to my own camera and laptop insurers to see if any similar changes have been made there

Just to update this i've received the details of the requirements of the specialist camera insurers for transport in hold baggage; basically it must be inside 'a purpose designed rigid bodied/hard equipment case' .
Personally the cost of purchasing and transporting such a container can't be justified - it will be cheaper not to travel.

Hope you've seen the news, you can now take some hand luggage. Though it's small in size right now, they have done this pretty quick, so perhaps there may be further improvements nearer your flight.
