Working 10 hours per week NMW

Can anyone help with this please. The part time job i found isnt definite yet but i spoke to the manager the other day and he said he will consider offering me a position.

I want to find out if i signed off JSA and started working part time just 10 hours a week for this company, would i still be liable to pay income tax and N.I.? My hours may increase once ive been with them a while and proved im reliable.

I think the minimum wage for over 21s is £5.80 at the moment. So for 10 hours thats just £58 per week. How much tax and NI would i need to pay on this income? Or will the employer not need my P45 because up to 16 hours work per week doesnt need to be declared? thanks

NI is based on what you receive weekly - I believe the lower limit is around £110?

Thanks i forgot about the personal allowance that you stated there. Ive spoken to the company today and they are saying that if they take me on their books it will cost them too much. Plus they already have another staff member on part time. They didnt say it in so many words but i think the hint was that they may be able to offer some temporary cash in hand work.

The problem is if i were to sign off and start working a few hours for them here and there off the books i wont be registered as employed. It would be similar to a zero hours contract except i would have no guarantee of anything. Can anyone advise what i should do?

You can stay signed on even if it is just for NI credits.
