Bundoran, Great Southern Hotel & the Beach at Rossnowlagh are great.

It's actually The Great Northern in Bundoran which personally, I'd avoid like the plague http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g211866-d212766-Reviews-Great_Northern_Hotel-Bundoran_County_Donegal.html Bundoran is ghastly (imho) although the surrounding area is ok
  • Me and the Hubby went to Jackson's in Ballybofey for a weekend a couple of months back. Never again, we were bored to tears. There's only so much time you can spend in McElhinneys and walking over and back the bridge to Stanorlar. We were very ready to come home by the end of the weekend.

We went to Letterkenny just after christmas. Loved it. I think it probably depends on your age too. There was loads that we could do in Letterkenny. We stayed in the Mount Errigal and they had great entertainment on each night. It was really great fun. I know it's not very far but it was somewhere different none-the-less.

We stayed out at Ballyliffen last year for a weekend too. It was great because it was nice weather and there were plenty of places to go walking in the local area.

Bundoran is cheesey, but we always have great craic there if we stay off-season. Although I would definitely never stay there during peak season.

Agree with Ballyshannon/Rossnowlagh recommendation. The beach is absolutely beautiful and there are some good restaurants and bars in Donegal town which is only a short drive away.

If you want somewhere that's a bit lively then your best staying in letterkenny

I tend to favour dunfanaghy as it has a couple of really clean white blue flag beaches, a couple of shops, cafes and pubs. The shandon hotel has an excellent purpose built spa - a real treat. there are some good deals on their website but avoid school holidays cause it tends to be family orientated. Alternatively Carrig Rua hotel has some good room deals and is in the middle of Dunfanaghy. For a special meal try the Cove in Portnablagh. There's plenty of golf courses nearby in Dunfanaghy, Falcarrgh and Downings. Also there's horseriding from the stables behind Arnolds hotel.

Alternatively Donegal town is also a good base - it has a handful of shops, hotels and pubs and is driving distance to Rosnowlagh beach, which gets a few surfers. Smuggler's Inn (if it still exists?) and Sands Hotel are near Rosnowlagh.

Portnoo/Narin has a good beach but for a bit more life you might want to stay in Ardara.

I don't want to put you off but be prepared for the high prices - we've notice a huge increase in the cost of everything in the south.

Harveys point is very nice if its for a couple, absolutely lovely part of the county;)

A short taxi ride would take you into Donegal Town for an evenings entertainment too. I advise a weekend break and take in the Sunday Carvary lunch, you will not eat for a week afterwards:rotfl:
I am trying, honest;) very trying according to my dear OH:rotfl:

The Villa Rose in Ballybofey is fantastic, we always used to stay in Jacksons but the standards started to slip recently so tried Villa Rose and were really impressed :T

Thankfully, Donegal is not 'in the south' then!
