Hi, my son has just been diagnosed with autism. Until we got the diagnosis they would not pay DLA, despite having all the symptons and needing lots of extra care. As soon as you get a diagnosis then that's when they will start considering it, in the experience I have had. Good luck though. You may just be luckier than me!!0

The diagnosis is irrelevant. I know someone whose daughter (completely different issues) has DLA without a diagnosis.Sealed pot challenge #232. Gold stars from Sue-UU - :staradmin :staradmin £75.29 banked

DLA is not awarded for a diagnosis, only for the care and/or mobility needs. My friend's daughter has always received DLA but did not get a diagnosis until she was about nine years old. If there has been a problem in getting DLA, it is not usually down to not having a diagnosis. I would always recommend getting help to fill in the forms.0

That's different to what you said though. Just because your children need help 24/7 and get DLA that doesn't mean that you HAVE to need that to get DLA. I don't need that and I get DLA. It's not fair to misinform people who may have no other experience and take what you say as fact that they won't get DLA because they/their child doesn't need help and supervision 24/7.0 -
I would fill in the forms, we've just been told by my sons portage worker that we should be claiming for my son, he has suspected autism and i have to be with him 24/7, he doesn't have a diagnosis yet but just called the benefits helpline and they told me he doesn't need a diagnosis for us to claim as his situation and needs aren't going to change just because he gets diagnosed as autistic. So i will be sitting down with the forms tonight and filling them in, the worst they can say is no.0

Hi
if you have never filled in DLA forms before it really is worth getting the help of a Welfare Rights Officer or CAB. Often it is the wording and how you present your case that can make a difference as to whether you are awarded it or not. The forms are very negative and it can be difficult to think about your child this way. Also, as you are so used to the behaviours a lot of stuff just seems normal.
Here are some links to NAS website that give some help with claiming DLA
