Nissan Micras worth

I know someone in work who gets written off cars from salvage auctions. he does them up then sells them on.

the car in question at the moment is an SH52 Nissan Micra. i checked on Parkers and its worth about 900 quid but that doesnt mention anything about it being written off.

dont know much about cars and was wonderin if anyone could help with info on how car insurance would be affected by written off motor. im 24 and this is the first car i will have after driving in the army for 3 years. xx

With it being a write off (cat c/d) expect it to be worth much less (I'd say knock about 30% off the price) you need to declare it to the insurer who will likely bump the price up and payout less in the event of an accident.

We are not exactly talking a lot of money here.

Does it run and drive well? When was it MOT'd? Get someone who knows to have a look if you aren't confident.

Even if it wasn't a write off at that sort of price you pays your money and takes a chance.

Sounds wrong to me, don't suppose you have any evidence to support such a sweeping statement?

I can't remember ever being asked about the write off status of any car I've ever insured and obviously any future pay out will reflect the actual value of the car, so if you buy a £2000 car but only pay £1500 because it’s been written off then it’s reasonable for the insurance company to only pay out £1500 in the case of a total loss claim.

Even more so, I seem to remember a case where a car owner didn’t know his car had been written off, insurance company discovered it and tried to reduce the pay out. The regulator ruled against them and they had to pay the full amount.

Yes, I read about that case too. I recall that the significant point was that the owner did not know that it was written off.

I suppose the thing is that unless you are asked you dont tell - but if you are you have to....
