Desperate times!

So my wife is being made redundant unfortunately. She is the main bread winner in the relationship. Unless she can find a job straight away we will be in trouble very soon. She will only get statutory payment which will be 6 weeks pay. I only earn £900 per month as a full time teaching assistant. I really want to know what goverment help we would be entitled to. As we need to pay all our bills inc mortgage and council tax.

Thanks in advance for your help.

She can claim JSA for 6 months which is £64 per week, after 13 weeks you may get help with the mortgage interest only

not sure that part is correct as this is paid on IB JSA not contribution based and will not apply due to the OPs wage.
Do you have any insurance cover with your mortgage?
  • Thanks so far for your replies.

We dont have any insurance unfortunately. No excuse really. So you think that we'll only be entitled to the £64 a week?

Yes and its for 6months then after that partners income is taken into account so she will not qualify. But hopefully she will find another job by then anyway!

Do you have any children ?
  • no children. this all makes me wonder how some people can live on benefits or seem to get a good income from them..

It's the people with kids who rake in the benefits. It's the child free who pay for it all.

    Hi,

How many hours do you work? If you work more than (if you had children it would be 16 hours) 30 hours a week you may get a small amount of working tax credits. A TC award can be a passport for other benefits i.e NHS charges.

Try putting your details into http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Diol1/DoItOnline/DoItOnlineByCategory/DG_172666 I'm not sure how accurate it is for TC but I've found it quite accurate for other benefits. There's also entitledto.

    Good luck,

    Tehya
