With the good weather have been taking the chance to catch up on some outdoor maintenance - so last week put some Dulux Weathershield White gloss on the wooden surround to the garage door - it was flaking and looking pretty shabby. Of course having done this the garage door (old metal) looked tatty so having used up the Dulux paint, I popped into Wilkos and discovered that Hammerite Garage Door paint was cheaper than another can of Dulux, and as it was for the garage door, I figured it might be better.

Anyway, cleaned it all down as per the instructions, and applied a coat on Saturday afternoon - all went on nice and white. I got interupted as my son needed attention so one last corner had to be left for a couple of hours (just wrapped the brush up and came back to it). Anyway when I came back to finish off I noticed that in comparison to the white paint I was putting on the dry paint appeared discoloured - greenish. Standing back I realised that in comparison to the surround the whole door had a faint greenish tinge to it. I also discovered a small splash of the Hammerite on the surround which again was greenish. I guess if everything was painted in the same colour the green is not enough to make it appear not white but with something white to compare to its enough to be annoying!

Has anyone else had this experience with their white paint, have I just got a duff tin - I looked again this morning to see if it was just a drying thing but after 36 hours its still the same.

Its not the sub surface because that was white before, and its not a reaction to the underlying paint because the greenishness appears on two different other paint surfaces.

I've emailed Hammerite so if I get a response I'll post back. In the meantime if you have a white garage door you want to paint you might want to give this stuff a miss!

Brush thoroughly cleaned and dried and in any event only used once before for white gloss paint! I've used their other paint loads of times including garage door paint (in blue at the last house - lasts well) - the radiator paint is so white it hurts! I did wonder if maybe I got the first tin after they'd run one of their green colours.

  • Hi WestonDave,

I have emailed you as I have the same problem, any suggestions as to why the paint has gone lime green are welcome.

Hi Red Diamond - email on its way.

After a lot of to and fro, they claimed there was nothing wrong with it despite the sample I painted on white paper clearly not being anywhere near the colour of the paper, and that I hadn't stirred it enough (tin says "do not mix vigorously"). They sent me a voucher for another can after I said that I had given it another try with a clean brush having stirred the life out of it, and still got it to come out green. I've sent you my batch codes etc so you can see if yours is the same batch.

  • I have had exactly the same problem. Waited weeks for decent weather. opened tin and it was lilac. Tin says to stir lightly but stirred until the paint was even and as much of the lilac oil had gone. It was like painting with milk and didn't cover minor marks. We left the garage door open (horizontal) to set for a couple of hours then closed it. As soon as I closed it it immediately looked lime green. there was no mistaking it. had to repaint it the next day with good old Dulux exterior but the hammerite had slid into a curtain effect. Unless Hammerite provide me with a new door there is nothing they can do to pacify me. DON'T BUY THIS PAINT!

Well, at least this paint is consistent.

I believe that this problem arises because there is no universal colour definition for 'white'. So if you started with the door Hammerited white and then duluxed the wood, the complaint could well be that Dulux white gloss has a pinky tinge.
