Belkin N Wireless Router F5D8236-4 V3

Bought this router from Argos late Nov early Dec 2009 (it was on offer) - set it up last week and it keeps crashing - it goes completely dead intermittently as though someone as removed the power. Have to reboot to get it to work again.

I have tried:
1. Change the channel on the router, like channels 1, 6, 13 etc.

2. Updated the firmware to the latest version available on the Belkin's site.

3. Reset the router to factory defaults and reconfigure.

I have lost the reciepts for this otherwise would have taken it back?

Any suggestions (besides binning it) will be appreciated

Thanx in advance

Are you using the USB Storage device function on it by any chance?
^^ I noticed my wireless sometimes goes funny when USB drives spin up

Also, when you say it goes dead are all lights going out or is it flashing some lights orange?

No USB storage devices are connected to my PC (or the Router if that is what you meant).

All lights go out - it goes completely dead.

    Thanks

You could try contacting Belkin support. Did you register the product when you bought it?

You could also try Argos (the worst they can say is "no"). It certainly sounds faulty.

In the meantime, try using a different power socket (to eliminate that as a cause). See if someone you know has a Belkin router and borrow their power supply for a day (if they are happy to do it!) and try that to eliminate the problem.

It doesn't look like a firmware or software problem - more a hardware issue but it could just be a simple case of a faulty power supply. Best to try the above first before going any further.

    Second this....

If you can get a multimeter it's possible to measure the voltages on the plug to see if they're coming out correctly... someone else will need to identify which is the positive / negative on the DC plugs as I never fully remember

Offhand I think the negative is anything below the yellow ring and positive is anything above, although someone who knows this will understand this better.

  • Well - I rang Argos Head Office and told them of the situation - they said that if I could obtain a bank statement showing proof of purchase then I should take that to the store where I bought the Router and return the faulty one since it was still under a 1yr warranty.

Thanks to online banking I got the appropriate statement and took the Router to the store - the manager was reluctant at first because I had purchased the faulty Router on a half-price deal - £68 down to £34 - in order to do a like for like exchange they were going to be out of pocket to the tune of £30.

However, when he put the exchange through the electronic till system, it allowed him to do the return without charging me extra :-). So now I have a brand new Working (so far) N wireless Router. :j:j:j:j

    Thanks for the advice guys
