does it matter where i put my external hard drive?

I just got my external hard drive today, and I was just wondering does it matter where I put it - does it have to be kept away from the main PC base unit/speakers/monitor - as I just wasnt sure about interferance or anything.

It would be sensible to keep it away from magnets in the speakers, but apart from that no.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

Make sure it has some airflow around it so it can disipate heat (i.e. don't pile stuff on it)

Put it reasonably close to your pc, really long cables are difficult and expensive to buy and if I remember correctly USB cables require a signal booster over 5 meters so to keep costs down use a short data cable and an extention for the power. :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Most PC speakers are shielded and dont affect anything in that way, it is more likley that the spinning of the hard drive will cause problems with the speakers. 1 of my external drives sits on the floor next to my mini fridge and the other sits at the back of my laptop and I dont get any problems.
