Frizzy hair nightmare!

Was the frizz caused by heat damage? (eg do you use straightening irons and hair dryers and etc alot) or is it the natural style of your hair?
If the frizz is a natural thing- eg your hair just grows like this, I'd say visit a stylist in a salon, see if you can get some tips, get a style that works with your hair type and everything can change- I had a friend who had very curly frizzy hair, she got a new cut and wow! The girl never looked back- I never saw such a change!
Also look at what your washing your hair with, if the shampoo is too drying it can cause dryness that even a conditioner and leave in cannot put back. I know its expensive but try other brands, there are hundreds out there and it could just be as simple as changing your brand.
I think the thing you need to remember is that if it is frizz caused by damage its never going to repair for good, you will need to keep applying a product to it every time you wash in order to have it looking less frizzy and stay away from the heat! It sounds like a problem solver but infact it causes dryness and makes the problem worse. Keep getting your hair trimmed until the damaged parts grow out and you can start again with un frizzy hair. Product wise there are a few suggestions but they do cost alot, however I have tried afew cheaper versions and have not found any that match the pricier versions.
My sister swears by Aphogee, its designed for Afro Caribbean hair but anyone can use it (her hair was barbie blonde and not naturally so! she'd repeat the belaching every 6 weeks without fail) ghd's every day, that sort of damage. She said it was fantastic.
I love Philip Kingsleys Elasticiser, there is also an extreme version which I have not tried but has good reviews. Leave in overnight for an even better result.
Kerastase Masqueintense is another good one but again is expensive. Make sure you get the right one for your hair type.
Other people have used coconut oil and rate it and there are others who use the CO idea and never shampoo as they feel it dries their hair out too much (there are sulphates in shampoos, this cleans the hair but different shampoos have different amounts, the more sulphates, the dryer (and possibly cleaner?) your hair).0 -
I never use straighteners, but use a hairdryer though only to take most of the dampness out of the hair so its not for long and the heat setting isn't high. My hair is blonde (out of bottle) and that is the main cause of the problem, but is also thick and wavy. A bit of humidity and it goes crazy.
To be honest, i have always gone for cheap own brand shampoos since i always thought it was better to spend more on branded conditioners so will try something of better quality to see if that helps.0 -
Meant to ask, is the coconut oil used as a cleanser, conditioner or as something to leave in?0

Thanks for all your suggestions, will see which ones i can find online. Don't mind paying extra for something that actually works. I find the extra strength frizzease only works for a short time then i have to keep reapplying it which makes my hair look dark and greasy and none of the Aussie range work for me at all unfortunately. I do use a hairdryer but don't brush while i dry it as that makes it worse. Air drying doesn't work for me, end up with more frizz
OK, I have really crazy hair, that ends up getting me loads of compliments. DH has similar hair in that its curly nd prone to frizz, but there are difference between curly frizzy heads! IMO there is no ONE product that works, but finding the right cmbination is the answer. what that combination is depends on the weather, and how your hair is naturally, and what you've washed with etc etc etc.
My fall back combination in Frizzease serum: and no, I know it doesn't work on its own, and the chances are you are using too much/the wrong strength or both, and I combine this with Tigi curl rocks, mixing together in my hand. This is pretty foolproof for both DH and I, for a soft, natural easy solution. It lasts me a couple of days (max record I think is five days, two-three is more normal) before I need to restyle. DH needs to do this daily....his shrt hair gets more ruffled overnight and his hair is both thinker and coarser than mine.
For a one day relaxed slight allowance of frizz when my hair is in good condition just leaving a good normal condition in, not a leave in, is a good one for me. Importantly it gives my hair a break from other stuff.
The Charles worthington curl cream,,,can't remember exact name, gives a softer, looser curl in combo with frizz ease than tigi curls rock.
DH likes a mousse, he prefers l'oreal studio curl to all others, for very long office days. It does go a little crispy if too generous, but the hold from mouse is better, good if he has a meeting late in the day.
The shampoo/conditioner has to be right too. I mainly wash only with conditioner. it took me a few failed attempts to get comfortable with this, I wash with shampoo as and when I really need to, trying to go not less than two weeks (down from daily) and wash with conditioner as often as I want...often daily.
getting the comination of products right, and remembering its also about washing products and how you are styling is the key. e.g. I last styled my hair on Saturday morning, it took me through saturday looking glam, and sunday, and today is perfectly acceptable, the curls are less even and ust starting to look weekend relaxed ..so will need restyling tonight/tomorow.
Why isn't air drying working for you I wonder...I barely ever use my hairdryer/diffuser, because it takes so long. I suspect its back t the products and styling.

A conditioner called Baby Love is good. You get it in the African Caribbean type product shops. My hair used to quite frizzy and also get very tangled, that really helps. Also a good hair cut. Here dead we lie because we did not choose
To live and shame the land from which we sprung.
Life, to be sure, is nothing much to lose,
But young men think it is,
And we were young.

Hmm. You need to experiment. Some people find it goes a little crunchy on hair if you use it as a leave-in, its not a protein but acts in the same way as a protein. I prefer to use it as a prewash treatment. It will protect the hair from any damage/drying from shampoo.
However, some people love it in the ends as a leave-in......0 -

Sorry to keep quoting you. This is the problem. You need to do damage limitation. I can only *guess* that your hair needs a protein treatment FOLLOWED by a heavy duty moisture treatment (important as protein can make your hair brittle). If you have a Sallys near you they have a good selection of products and staff (imo) are great for advice.
Been there coming out the other end - with reasonably healthy hair.0 -
Have found a branch of Sallys in a nearby town so will be going there for some advice
Also, today I went into the Health food shop in my village and they had some coconut oil for only £3 so i thought it was worth a shot and put some into may hair whilst dry and left it in. Have to say this has already made a good improvement and has separated out the curls. Gonna try using it as a pre- conditioner, and also put it on when my hair is damp and see which works best. I know that the bottle blonde is the cause of the problem
but i started going grey in my late 20s and i don't like it! I found that light brown colours (my natural colour) just didn't cover the white hairs whereas the blonde blends it in more. Can't afford to have it done professionally, just have to do the best i can.

Just to add, my hair is about eight different shades of colour ATM, including blonde, and while it does impact on things like conditioner choice, the right products still let be have hair that gets compliments. You can have both!0
