My grandfather suggested his favourite hymn, when we got married. Its "Dear Lord and father of mankind". Its lovely, but the second line is "forgive our foolish ways". Not the most suitable for a wedding!:rotfl:
My husband wanted "all things bright and beautiful"- No!!!!!
Trying to remember what we did have, though as its nearly 22 years ago- its proving difficult. I do remember the vicar reading my favourite prayer, which is St Francis of Assis, which the hymn "make me a channel of your peace" is based on.0 -
we had Amazing Grace, Be Thou my Vision, Before the Throne of God , All Creatures of our God and King and How Great Thou Art. There is another thread about wedding hymns somewhere if you search for it.0

We're having Amazing Grace and Give Me Joy

We asked each set of parents to choose one they'd had at their wedding.import this0

We're having amazing grace and lord of the dance as our main hymns. Im also having Almighty Father strong to save as we're both sailors, so personalises it for us.
I would just go for something that people will know (school hymns) so that everyone gets involved. As long as people know the tune they'll sing along ok.:jProud mummy to a beautiful baby girl born 22/12/11 :j0 -

this is what he said other wise people wont sing0 -
I'm also having Almighty (maybe Eternal) Father Strong to Save
I thought it was a bit serious but I live near the coast and always think of the folks out on lifeboats when the weather is bad, plus it's one of my favourites anyway.
My dad's favourite is Praise my Soul as well so we are having that.
I think if you just pick the hymns you like, and if they are popular tunes it helps even more. try not to worry about other people think. The vicar will help too, so if you are worried about anything being unsuitable just ask.0 -

Im hoping people will know the tune as it featured in the Titanic film. (kate winslet one). My MIL2B says its too serious and she'll cry thinking about us drowning at sea!!:jProud mummy to a beautiful baby girl born 22/12/11 :j0 -
yes, I was a little concerned (had forgotten about the Titanic thing too!) as I know it is used at funerals too and it is rather solemn!
but then Amazing Grace and All things bright and beautiful get used at funerals too (probs because they are people's favourites etc) so best just to have what you like
and it does sound very appropriate in your case with you being sailors. I'm sure everyone will appreciate why its important to you both
and that's the most important thing

Im hoping so. The church we're getting married at is a sailors church too, ships used to drop of their dead and those who were washed up on the coast were buried in the churchyard. We dont live in the parish (although its our closest church) so we've had to attend church regularly to get on the electoral role for the church.:jProud mummy to a beautiful baby girl born 22/12/11 :j0
