gas flue noise

the flue from our gas boiler runs across the ceiling of our bedroom (apartment) and everytime the boiler fires up to heat, the flue has a really really loud clicking and clunking noise coming from it. the noise isnt entirely random though it seems the follow the same pattern each time. its the first time ive had gas heating so really know nothing about it but the noise is so loud sleeping is impossible. this means no morning showers before work either as it would wake my partner or not heat on in the mornings. we are going to get a gas engineer to look at it but was just wondering if anyone had any ideas or experience of this before we forked out a lot of money!
thanks in advance

it could be the heat expanding the metal flue and creating problems, or it could be noise from the boiler/pipes/pump travelling along the flue.
    Get some gorm.

I assume you mean the flue is hidden above the plasterboard ceiling?

Is it a twin flue (2 pipes, flue gases out and air in), or a standard co-axial flue?

If it is hidden, then legally you should have access panels in any ceilings for the flue joints to be inspected at each boiler service, especially if it is a twin pipe flue.

Not a Barrett apartment by any chance? Barratt have had literally loads of twin flue set ups condemned and turned off because of lack of inspection access.

    thanks for the info.
its apparently a twin flue. there is no access in the ceiling at all its just plasterboard but in the cupboard were the boiler is there is a panel on the cupboard ceiling thats removable so can you get access to the flue here? we have talked about this with some of our neighbours who have no noise problems with them so there must be a problem somewere. was trying to guesstimate how big a problem it would be!

I would get yourneighbours together and sort out the flus access for inspection.

If there isn't any, then the installation should really be condemned until there is.
