Hi, I'm getting a bit frusttrated with my Dell inspiron again. My laptop is picking up my O2 internet connection fine but after I ran a McAfee scan on my main home commputer, I have no access to IE or Mozilla etc. I have run IP config and have discovered that IP routing is not enabled, nor is wins proxy. The media state is disconnected for the ethernet adapter Local Area Connection and Wireless. It also says DHCP is not enabled and NetBIOS over TCpip is disabled.
This, by the way means very little to me. If someone could guide me through the necessary stages of reconnecting again I'd be very grateful.

2p or not 2p? That is the question!

Confused a little "wireless on desktop PC"- "with Ethernet disconnected"
Is it Wireless or Ethernet cabled ?
>IP routing is not enabled
Fine
>nor is wins proxy
Fine
>media state is disconnected for the ethernet adapter Local Area Connection
Plug in the Ethernet cable
>and Wireless
One or the other - not both, ie Ethernet cat5 cable or wireless0 -
Thanks for your reply. I normally have a wireless set up on my home computer. I have just gone into the drives via F2 an discovered that Drives 1, 2, 3 and 5 have no devices.
Do I need the ethernet cable for wireless but not L A Connection?
Sorry but confused.2p or not 2p? That is the question!0 -
Ethernet cable for WIRED
Wired is much better option if available, more "secure", faster, connects straight away, less user maintenance required - normally it just works.
re DHCP this normally needs to be on for easier home use unless you are on a fixed IP address or at work, if you are the IT person at home and want to select IP address manually and you know what you are doing then leave it off and type in your home network IP and sub-netmask to all your pc's and any others that need IP's later.
For home use or more than a dozen PC'sto manage DHCP needs to be ON.0 -
O. I'm just lost. I guess I'll have to pay to get it fixed again. Thanks anyway.2p or not 2p? That is the question!0

Do you normally connect to the Internet on the main computer via wireless? Or is it normally connected via a cable?0

I normally connect via wireless. I've tried everything. I phoned ISP who tell me router etc fine. It has to be a computer problem again.2p or not 2p? That is the question!0

>It has to be a computer problem again.
A simple setting is more likely therefore human problem.
Re tell us what you have done as you mention everything but tell us nothing...."frusttrated " "lost" "confused" "guess" "F2 an discovered that Drives 1, 2, 3 and 5 have no devices" "means very little to me"
Would like to tell you but you sound resigned to "pay again".0 -
Thanks total solutions. You are right - why should I pay! I hate to let this beat me. I think I have deleted a system file but I'm not sure which one. Now I have discovered how to reinstall or possibly fix my windows xp I think. (Don't worry, I have a back up of my data from before.) I probably will have to reinstall software for the wireless adapter which is a dell one attached to the machine, my mcaafee etc and maybe my O2 broadband installation disc again. Am I right? Onwards and upwards!!! A very useful site espresso, thanks, I will look around it and see if I caused the problem by doing something to McAfee too. Appreciate this help everyone.2p or not 2p? That is the question!0
