Rome in July - anyone been then?

Friend and me considering a short break to Rome but we can only get the first week in July off it seems between us.

Several people have said they consider it way too hot and humid to go then and that a lot of shops close for July and Aug.

Has anyone been in July?

Thinking of putting a DIY online deal together with flights/apartment but will look into getting good insurance at time of booking.

Im not great in the heat but have been abroad when there were heatwaves so cant see it should be too much of a problem as long as we keep covered up in the sun and have lots of water.

Id also look into pre booking for the main sites to try and avoid the queues but know you have to be prepared to queue when in Rome!

Other option is to leave it until next year but I can only get time off in the main school hols - students I work with finish end of June so I can get a week off before the main school hols in the hope it will be a bit quieter then.

Any advice on going in the hotter months will be great - interested to see how people got on or if it is really better to leave it and see if I can get time off in a cooler spell next year (but this would be a main school hol week like Easter/Whitsun)

Thanks Alison

I have been to Rome in July. I did not find it humid, but it is hot and dusty. If you are going for city sightseeing and shopping it is the worst time of the year, although accommodation prices are not as high. Look for accommodation with air conditioning and a good central location so you can come back for a shower and siesta. Rome in the summer is still very interesting, but tiring. If you can manage it, it is best to do a few days in Rome followed by a few days on the coast or in the countryside to relax.

I wouldn't go to Rome in July; totally the wrong weather for sightseeing. I'd go at Easter if I were you, or the October half term.

Morning, I went at the end of July and yes it was very hot. But we managed to do loads of sightseeing. Didn't use public transport though as that would have tipped me over the edge ! We walked everywhere. Wear loose fitting light clothes, sunhat and really comfy shoes. Definately get air con. We loved it. But to be honest, if I had to choice i'd go earlier in the season.

We have been twice in July/August and found it fine. You need to pace yourself and have plenty drinks/gelato stops:j (but there is a fountain on every corner) but it is perfectly do able. It is hot, but the shops/restaurants only close in August, and then only some of them.
