Hi All
Husband just bought a car today and we drove down the motorway to another garage to sell his old one. Then realised that the new car has no tax disc. Bloke at the previous garage pleading ignorance (seems to have become particularly stupid now he has the money) and is claiming that we have 5 days to get it taxed. Chap at 2nd garage (very helpful) said that is not the case and that if we drive without the tax disc the car will be impounded and we'll not be insured.
Husband has insured the car but obviously we cannot drive it without the tax disc displayed. Clearly the car is untaxed but not sure how we tax it without the V5(?) or whatever that document is called.
Any one any ideas?
For those of you who can read minds, I will send messages of the names of both garages..
Don't buy from first - they are dodgy
Do buy from second - we have now both bought from and sold to and he's a nice bloke.
And thanks to Dad for rescuing us as we couldn't get home otherwise!

You have not got the logbook? what about a small green slip?
It wont invalidate your insurance.0 -

Didn't he give you the new keepers supplement from the V5? You can use that to tax the car, you don;t need the whole V50 -

I must admit I would never assume a car was going to have tax when buying a car from a secondhand dealer - it would form part of the negotaition.
Was there an advert in the press stating that it was taxed (Autotrader etc) - you could present such a thing to Trading standards and see if you get some of your cash back.0 -
I've never had a 2nd hand car dealer sell me a car with road tax on it they dont usually worry about things like that.0

Thanks All
I guess it's a case of let the buyer beware - obviously it's fine for the dealer to knowingly let you drive off in a an illegal, uninsured car - Oh and he hadn't even put all the nuts on the wheels.
We have the little green slip but having picked up the car on Saturday afternoon we couldn't tax it ourselves as the post offices were alll closed. I understand you can use an on-line service but I think you have to be the registered owner.
Cheers all, and happy motoring0
