Quick MOT/Tax/Insurance Question
Options
Hi,
I am trying to sell a car, however I am currently driving a different car, so it has no tax, insurance or MOT. I have had a few people interested, but they have all asked that I get the MOT done so they can drive it away. So basically I am wondering where I stand with having no tax or insurance on the car. Can I still drive it to the garage to get the MOT done?
Thanks in advance,
Matt

You can drive the car to a pre booked test at the MOT garage without tax or an MOT.
Unfortunately, you can't drive it anywhere without insurance.0 -
See if a garage will collect on a truck for a small charge, what car is it how much you selling for. Best to sell with an MOT.Google gives you answers use it.........0

You need insuarance and road tax to keep a car on the road. You need insurance before you road tax. To get round the insurance issue, which to remain legal you must have, you could insure it by the day. approx £15/day.
The car is not covered by any other insurance, only its own. i.e. any one taking a test drive will not be insured, their own policy if they have one, does not allow them to drive an uninsured car. Road tax and MoT will help sell the car. Would you buy a car with no MoT ?Mortgage free

Thank you for your responses. I am going to look into insuring it for the day to get it to a garage. The car is a 1991 BMW 318 I Convertible. It is currently on Ebay for a starting price of £1750. I completely understand why people are asking me to get the MOT done and I am defiantly going to try to sort something out.M May11 55886.810

and when people come to test drive make sure you see their insurance certificate and check it has a part that says "The policy holder may also drive a vehicle not owned by him" or similar0
-
Driving other vehicles cover MAY be sufficient for somebody else to drive using their own policy but they need to check that it really does say that AND that there is no restriction saying that the vehicle driven must have an insurance policy specifying it is covered with an authorised insurer (some driving other vehicles cover requires this but other do not).
Remember, too that even if it does, it is third party only (it won't cover damage to your vehicle), it does not cover anybody but the policyholder (not other named drivers) and you will be breaking the law if you allow somebody to drive it uninsured.0 -

tbh that does not make any diff these days
my friend got a 200 pound fine and 6 points from driving without insure when he test drove a car he wanted to buy
he is fully comp and allowed to drive other cars 3rd party BUT the car you drive has to be insured in it's own right by the owner0 -

There are only a very small handful of Insurers that insist that the car you are driving must have it's own Insurance.
Your friend was unlucky as his certificate would not have stated this requirement as the few companies that have this restriction note it in the policy. So the police do not usually pick it up unless they ring the Insurers at the road side as most people would just produce the Insurance Certificate which does not contain the restriction so is often accepted.
It's arguable that he was actually insured as the certificate is a legal document stating what is covered, so his Insurers would probably have had to pay any third parties claim and then recover it from your friend. Thus it's arguable he was actually insured.
Viao makes a good point in that you should ensure the person driving your car has insurance. Inspecting a certificate would be more than sufficient to satisfy the police that you had not aided and abeted no insurance. There was a court case that ruled the defendant had done enough by asking if his friend who drove had insurance. The judge ruled that as he had been told he had insurance it was sufficient proof in that particular case0 -

It's often not possible to tax a car with just one day's insurance0 -

I'd say the car has to be insured in its own right if your certificate says it has to be, I can't remember any of mine requiring that over the last 35 years, although I understand that some do just as some don't give cover to under 25s and some don't give the cover at all.0
