Bulbs in fruit tree and rose pots

I have literally hundreds of spring and summer bulbs and was wondering if I could put some into my fruit tree 40 litre pots and roses without any detrimental effect? Think they would look nice together but wanted to check?

Thanks

    Hi

I'd be wary of planting anything in a fruit tree container at this time of year. The trees are growing and you wouldn't want to give it a shock and stop it from flowering. So I'd say it's best to leave it for now. If you are going to do it, then do it in October or when the tree is well and truly dormant.

I would have given you slightly different advice if your fruit trees had been in the open ground. I've underplanted all my fruit trees with spring bulbs, but they are in the open ground. I thin the bulbs out every year so that they don't crowd out the trees and the site doesn't get congested.

Having said all that, I planted bulbs by mistake in some of my big pots of shrubs and have left them to spread for years and years. The pots are now completely rootbound and it's going to be a right aching job to transplant them. But they thrive, look lovely and don't seem to be suffering, so I'm not going to touch them.

That's the thing about gardening. It's only by breaking the rules or making mistakes that we come across new ways of doing things that work. Good luck!

    Thanks what a great response.

Im exactly as you suggest, try it see what happens if it dont work dig it up and try it again.

Just before i read this it wasn't gardeing exactly but i had cited 2 bird boxes last year in my garden and checked both but nothing had used them. I took them both down and put them up a conifer at the back of the gardemn. Within an hour 2 blue tits were perpetually coming in and outof it, i hope theyll settle there!

Thanks again i think i will plant up in my rose tubs and try one of the fruit trees.

    Thanks,
