I am bit worried that theres nothing on the website to say they have received my sons birth certificate, i checked on the royal mail website and it was delivered and i have a signature for it, so when will i know?? i have already had his birth certificates go missing in the post before and this was the last one i have of his!
i got the declaration to sign come through yesterday, but i am thinking im not going to sign it unless its sorted on the website... is that wise or should i just send that off and hope for the best?

i really appreciate all of your help with this Taiko and everyone else!

You can sign the declaration, it makes no difference as it'd be the same form once they have assessed you. I've previously asked this over the phone, signed the first form and everything happened as expected!

Are you sending things to SFE HQ in Glasgow? If so, it will take time for things to be processed. I assume you included a covering letter with the birth certificate detailing your information (ID number etc).

Worst case scenario, you can obtain replacement birth certificates:

Ah, Just read the website... the address is now Darlington (think it used to be Glasgow?!). This just means that you're dealing centrally rather than with your local authority -things will take a bit longer.

I'd give them a bit more time before chasing them, I've been worried before about documents etc, but its all turned up and been processed.
  • Ok i am really p***ed off right now, dispite sending my sons birth certificate off on the 26th april by recorded delivery, and it being signed for on the 27th april, i have now received a letter dated 6th may asking for me to send it.
I am just so fed up, i still have not received my p60s or child benefit letter back from the 1st april which i am now in desperate need of for other benefits, so dont tell me they have lost the birth certificate. do they have my address on record so they know where to send it back? the guy on the phone said they would send it right back by recorded delivery when they have finished with it.

It is possible to take your documents into your local education authority office for verification. They can take the copies they need there and then. It's also possible to discuss your application with someone in person which can be really helpful if you're in any situation that isn't the standard 18 year old, supported by full time employed parents.

Having read a bit more closely, I can see now that you're in an LEA where you have to deal with them centrally. Bad luck :( I had very good experiences with helpful staff at my LEA. No idea why they're changing the system away from that.

I phoned up on the 30th April and the man told me they had only got as far as evidence up to the 26th March so perhaps it is still waiting in the system and hopefully not lost. I haven't had any of my bits back yet from 13th April either.

If he is sending things to Darlington (like I have to) then we no longer have a local education office that will deal with our student loan stuff. It is all done in Darlington.

Luckily I only get the non-income assessed bit from SFE now and I applied as soon as I could this year having had trouble last year.
