Just checked my NSI index linked certicate .I bought £10000 worth in November 2008 and they are now worth £10386 .Are they doing any good as Im not sure

I make that equivalent to about 2.7% AER (based on 3.86% over 17 months). For a basic-rate taxpayer that's equivalent to about 3.4% before tax. For a 40% taxpayer it's equivalent to about 4.5% before tax.
You could have done worse. And you have the added certainty that you will beat RPI inflation over the full term.Warning: In the kingdom of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.
