I've done a simple calculation based on my 2nd last bill. This showed that every time my gas meter reading goes up by 1, it costs £1.13, including VAT. This is an average because they use two different rates, but it's a good rule of thumb and allowed me to forecast my next bill with 99% accuracy. Now I'm not sure if that's cubic meters (I think it is but it's too late to go outside and check now!!) but that would mean that if my reading went up by 70, I would expect to pay £79.10.

You may be on a very high tariff, or maybe I'm misunderstanding what 70 cubic meters are.

    Can anyone else clarify?

You have an Imperial gas meter(the older type which measures in cubic feet) this means that every gas unit is approx 31.5kWh.

So you are paying approx 3.6p for a kWh as an average. The more gas you use the cheaper the average price per kWh.

The OP seems to have a Metric gas meter(measures in cubic metres) so each gas unit is approx 11.2kWh. If they have indeed only used 70 cubic metres that would be 784kWh they are paying approx 30p for a kWh - about 10 times too much.

Given their poor typing I suggest they have used 700 cubic metres or paid £23!
