Shipping things abroad.

Hi there,
I was wondering what is the cheapest to sent things abroad. Friends of mine need to relocate to Taiwan and wanted to sent some of their personal posession.
Query Ship or Air?
Was told that if shipping they will have to also pay about £100 to claim their stuff from the port in Taiwan.
Anyone have any ideas?
