Trip around the world, £5000 budget - Any advice?

Hi there,

I'm graduating from university this summer and the summer will be the last extended period of time ill have to go travelling for ages since I'll be starting work in September.

Since I havent gone travelling much before I've decided to use a significant amount of my savings and see the world. I have a £5000 budget and I'd like to see as much (safely) as possible. If possible I'd like to not have a strict plan of how long to spend in each of the countries I visit before I go so booking flights in advance would not be preferable. My only thoughts on the journey so far is start in New Zealand, head on to Australia then New Guinea, Singapore, China, Japan, Russia then into Europe.

Does anyone have advice on how to plan a trip around the world, maybe recommend a special flight ticket they could use or could share their own experiences of trips like this one?

Thanks,
James.

    Hi James

A company such as Travelbag, Trailfinders or Journey Latin America would be able to quote you for a round the world ticket - round figure of £1000. Also you can use one of the alliance memebrs eg. Star Alli9ance who have a number of airlines as members and you can use any of these on your route. Make a start with BA, Star Alliance and Air New Zealand - all good web sites.

I am very surprised you have not included South America in your plans. Brilliant place especially Argentina, Chile, Brazil and Uruguay. The Chilean people just love the British and everything is so cheap. My suggested route would be Manchester-Madrid-Santiago-Tahiti-Noumea-Australia-New Zealand- Singapore-Hong Kong-Vietnam-Thailand-Japan-Russia then home.

    Enjoy yourself.

Agree with most of above but Tahiti's expensive. If you use Air New Zealand stop of at Raratonga at Vara's Beach House. Its heaven with a reef on your doorstep. You need an open jaw ticket or ANZ will let you have so many stop offs. I think the rule is you can't go back on yourself. Check Travelbag. Give them your itinerary and you'll get some ideas.
    Enjoy.

As far as the mechanics of organising/buying a ticket go there's lots of info on the flyertalk forums -
    http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=391
Usually with a Round The World type ticket you can fairly easily change flight times and less easily (i.e. you pay) change the route.
The Lonely Planet forums are also pretty good for info on this sort of thing.

Personally I'd be inclined to miss out Europe (and poss Russia), include South America, miss out Singapore and add a couple more places in Asia - Thailand, Laos, Vietnam (all fairly accessible and well travelled).
