Need a new TV - advice required!

I am wanting to purchase a new television. I have seen the Sony Bravia rear projection televisions and wondered if anyone had one and if they are any good. I have been using Kelkoo to compare prices and even ordered one - then to find they had none in stock.

I don't understand all the forthcoming changes in TV's, so what would you buy?

Right, whatever you buy make sure it has a digital tuner for receiving freeview because in the next couple of years the government will be switching off analogue tv and then you will need a separate box/receiver to watch any telly. Some people don't mind having a separate box but they take up space, use up power points and come with another remote control to add to the collection. Now you may have Sky or cable and not need a built in digital tuner but what if one day you wish to move your tv to a room without a sky box or want to sell it to someone without Sky? You could also record a Sky channel whilst watching a freeview channel.
If you don't need a large screen then don't get one, they dominate the room, cost loads and mostly show up the poor quality of digital television signals due to the data compression in the transmission. It's far better to get a tv screen correctly sized for your room which should be a screen height of around a third of the viewing distance.
I have just bought a CRT (traditional telly) screen as I feel the picture is a far better representation of the tv signal for the money than lcd screens costing almost twice as much.
If you do buy an LCD or plasma then it would be better if it were HD ready but as noone except Sky broadcasts in HD (high definition) standard you probably won't use it unless you have Sky but bear in mind that Sky are also charging 10 pounds a month plus you have to buy a special box in order to access HD. This could change however as the BBC and ITV are running trials.

Have a look on https://www.clearance-comet.co.uk for tv's as they normally go for 2 thirds of their standard retail price on comet.co.uk. This is because the goods are returned, end of line or ex display. . However if it doesn't bother you if a tv has been returned or has a mark on the box then you can get a very good deal. My JVC tv costs 350 new and I got it for 150. There is nothing wrong with it and it still comes with a 12 month warranty from Comet! Check the condition report before you bid and DO NOT EVER BUY AN EX DISPLAY TV.
  • Try https://www.prcdirect.co.uk. If you find a good instore price johnlewis might do a price match then you get the free 5 years guarntee but they will only match on a like for like basis. I gave up trying to get a pm out of john lewis and bought from prcdirect who were excellent to deal with and exchanged my first panel that was faulty without any trouble.
