What it advertised as having air con?
If it was you have a good claim, ignoring the rest of the problems.

the car has AC,it just doesnt work
the seller could turn around and say it worked when they left
AC is one of those things i would always check as its a deciding factor for me on a car

He could, but it would be up to the judge to decide then if the seller couldn't prove it, several posts on here were it's gone the buyers way on private sales.

A sniffer test is done by a garage, they use a machine to test for exhaust fumes coming out of the coolant (if the head gasket has failed it is very likely there will be some there - and it is this escape of gasses a compression test would detect - although poor compression can mean any number of things other than failed head gasket). I wouldn't recommend trying to breathe exhaust fumes as they contain carbon monoxide which isn't too good for your health (can cause death at high levels).

Top up with the correct coolant type and dilution level to the max level when cold, and keep an eye on the level. It's supposedly often normal for the engine to consume a small amount of coolant.

As it’s running fine I’d do nothing for the time being apart from monitoring the water level.

Get into the habit of checking the water level every day. Do it first thing before you start it and whilst the car is cold.

Cars shouldn’t use any but the level can vary a bit depending on temperature or even how the car is parked.

As long as the levels are above the minimum mark you don’t need to do anything, just note the level.

If you notice a continual or significant drop in it then you need to start investigating, otherwise just enjoy your new wheels

Air con repairs will start at £30-40 for the re gas plus fixing whatever is broken.

Take it to a air con specialist and see what they say.

Depends on what has sheared, plus drying the sytem, then re-gassing.

    Thanks for all your responses.

Re: sniffer test :rotfl:I wasn't about to start sniffing exhaust fumes. I know I'm blonde but come on!

I've just drove home again (15miles) no sign of maintenance light and the water level is the same as it was this morning.

The air con part is a small silver cylinder by the water pump with a bleed valve on it. It has a part number HFC 134a.

HFC 134a is the refrigerant... the fluid/gas in the air con system.

air con part would be one of the ac connection pipes (where they plug the regas machine to)
