Epson Printer Cartridges - faulty -replacement rights

I had a hi-capacity Epson cartridge T0711 (about £10) which developed a fault early its use. On contacting them I was told a) must have proof or purchase b) it must have been used within 3 months of purchase. I am a receipt keeper but I don't keep them for smaller priced items especially consumable items. I was also shocked at their bald statement of use within 3 months. Loads of purchasers must buy such things in relative numbers that mean that use over 3 months is pretty likely happening. Their reply on writing was to say:

...I can confirm that Epson consumables have a warranty of 90 days. Cartridges which are less than 3 months old can be tested and replaced if found to be faulty, cartridges cannot be tested or replaced without a valid proof of purchase showing that the cartridge has been purchased in the last 90 days. Please be advised, consumers have no automatic rights against manufacturers or against distributors/wholesalers in the supply chain between the manufacturer and the retailer. This is because the consumer has no contractual relationship with anyone other than the retailer who they paid for the product. Therefore, your rights under the Sales of Goods Act are against the supplier and the credit supplier and not Epson.....

I could have cheated and gone and bought another Epson cartridge and used the receipt from that (hmmm. maybe). But I'd rather air this problem here and see what other people have to say. I think their policy is really astoundingly mean. Printer manufacturers tell us to buy their inks or they won't be responsbible for printer problems. But when their inks fail, they wish to take no responsbility. I don't feel they should be allowed to get away with this.

I use jettec in my epson. I only ever had one which I thought hadn't lasted well. I phoned them up, they sent me another one without any hassle.
They seem easily as good as the original epson ones.

Epson are 100% correct with respect to Sales fo Goods Act.

The reason for the 90 day warranty i presume, is that inks dry out causing adverse affects of the longevity.
