Bedroom help- Gah!

Hi there, I'm sure all you lovely people will be able to offer me some ideas here.
We are finally doing our bedroom :j but it is a big job . It's an old house (1905) and has lathe and plaster walls. The plaster is no longer attatched to the lathes so it all has to be stripped and reboarded.
We don't have enough sockets so I'm going for 2 double sockets each side of the bed and 2 doubles on the opposite wall which the door hangs on.
I don't know quite how to get an image on here of the room layout so I will try to explain it.
As you walk into the room the wall to the left is 4.08m (into an alcove) and the door is right up to the corner.
The wall that stretches in front of you is 2.85m long.
The wall facing you (which the bed goes up against) is 3.74m.
Joining that (so diagonal to the door) is a small wall 1.63m wide which is filled bt a 1.26m window. The window is 0.58m from the floor and is 1.72m high.
Then the alcove wall is 1.27m wide and 33cm deep to the window wall.
Here's my problem. The radiator is at the foot of the bed on the longest wall. DH says that the natural place to put a wardrobe is in the alcove but it will only fit a double wardrobe. We will the end up with chest of drawers as bedside tables and still won't have enough storage space.
I would like a piece of furniture like this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/A-SUPERB-VICTORIAN-SOLID-MAHOGANY-WARDROBE-COMPACTUM_W0QQitemZ180496297767QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Antiques_AntiqueFurniture_SM?hash=item2a066aef27 or http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/large-victorian-compactum-triple-wardrobe_W0QQitemZ270566074148QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Antiques_AntiqueFurniture_SM?hash=item3efefea724 or http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Antique-Burr-Walnut-Linen-Press-Mirrored-Wardrobe-C19_W0QQitemZ170472581963QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Antiques_AntiqueFurniture_SM?hash=item27b0f52b4b along the 2.85m wall. Unfortunately you would open the door onto it (the door would fully open but the wardrobe would be there IYSWIM?). Then in the alcove I would put a dressing table (chest of drawers type) or a tallboy depending on how much storage was still needed.
DH says that it will crowd the room too much and be too dark but he won't consider painted furniture. He won't consider building a fitted wardrobe into the alcove either.
Our ceilings are 2.54m high so will be able to take tall furniture.
Does anyone have any ideas for the best solution for our starage needs?
Currently we have (had) an ikea pax wardrobe with bifold doors and a trouser rail at mid height. It also had a shelf at the top. It has no drawer space. I can't reach the top shelf so it would be best used for seasonal stuff suitcases etc. DH's clothes fill the full width of the wardrobe. I'm unable to hang any dresses due to the trouser rail. DH also likes to hang his coats in the wardrobe!
Please help me out here with any ideas- I feel I'm becoming slightly deranged. Apparently having a clothes clearout is not an option. Nor is having a look at the clothes that we own. Mil has said that you can't just get rid of clothes because you haven't got any storage and basically said it was a bad thing that I try to be a bit minimalist . I'm only minimalist because I have 3 drawers 40cm x 40cm x 60cm and a cupboard unit 84cmw x 42cmh x 35cmd.
Go on then, what do you lot do?

I don't know about your wardrobes, but why not get 3-way switching so you can turn the room light on/off at both sides of the bed as well as the door, while you're doing your wiring.A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0

May I suggest a unit that goes from floor to celing with upper hanging rails that piviot down that way the footprint of the unit is the same but you get a more hanging space...also a bed with storage underneath for the less used items..
if there is enough room push the chest of draws away fronmt eh bed by 12-18 inches and fix a corner shelf onto them as a bedside table
also consider building a head board to the wall that is 10inches deep to store those odd books and lights on instead of bedside tables.THE SHABBY SHABBY FOUNDER0
