Bought a new car without tax
Options
I am in such a pickle.
My Dad lives in a different town to me and has purchased a car on my behalf. The car has no MOT and no tax. Dad will MOT the car and then send me the certificate and log book. I will then need to get insurance on it before going to the post office to get a tax disc.
Can I get insured on it without being the registered keeper?
I still have my current car and will be selling it but will struggle to be any period without some transport.
Can I avoid insuring them simultaneously? If I do that will I then end up cancelling the current car's policy too early (rather than just upgrading car) and incurring a penalty?
Also, if I use the little green slip to get the tax from the post office will they then send that off to the dvla, or do I still have to do it?
I think my head might explode!!

Hey - yeah, should have explained, Dad is an MOT tester and had the car up on the ramp for a thorough inspection before buying it!0

You don't send the green slip and neither does the post office, you keep it. The person you bought the car off sends off the original V5 after you have both signed it.
You current insurer will probably cover you on both cars whilst your old one sells for a small fee. Mine have always agreed to this upto a maximum of 3 months.0 -
Can I get insured on it without being the registered keeper? - yes you can. you *will* be the registered keeper once it updates with DVLA so that is ok.

Also, if I use the little green slip to get the tax from the post office will they then send that off to the dvla, or do I still have to do it? - you keep the green slip, it's your proof of purchase. Only send it to DVLA if you are told to by them (e.g. the original logbook gets losts and you need to re-apply)
