Dell payments

Hi
I received a letter from Debt & Revenue Collection Services yesterday morning for a demand notice on behalf of Dell.
To my horror I discovered this was my Laptop which was purchased from Dell in February 2008! I called this agency and they informed me that Dell had not put the payments through correctly from over two years ago but will put payment on hold for 14 days until I investigate this.
I thought I paid for this in good faith with my Credit Card at that time. My account is now closed with this credit card company but I will be getting the old statements soon.
Dell have never asked for this payment and I as far as I was concerned I'd paid for my item and received a statement from Dell at that time advising of sale.
I'm totally shocked by the poor customer service of Dell. They should have written to me directly instead of going straight to a debt company and why has it taken them this long to discover this?
Why would Dell send me the Laptop in the first place if they didnt have payment? and is anyone in the same boat?
Many Thanks
