Where to go to buy a reconditioned Peugeot 406 engine?

Good afternoon,

My trusty old Peugeot 406 td (Nreg) has had a major head gasket failure and it has been looked at and been decided that a new engine is the best option.
I have been on a few quote sites, and I wondered if anyone knew the difference between a complete and bare engine, and which on i require?

Does anyone have any advice on the cheapest way to get an engine sourced and fitted?
Going to get it sorted on Monday, I have the car at a garage that will do the work if necessary, but they need me to find the engine.

New engine for a failed head gasket is a bit extreme. Other problems with the engine?

Do you have a specialist peugeot breakers near you? They are usually the best place not the cheapest but know their stuff.

Getting your current engine rebuilt maybe cheaper & longer lasting.

At that age would it not be better to scrap it rather than shell out for a 'new' engine by which time you've factored in labour, would be more than what it's worth?

Even having it repaired, if indeed it is the head gasket, surely isn't going to be cost effective.

A bare engine usually means all the ancillaries are missing - alternator, power steering pump, distributor etc. Complete suggests that all these are fitted to the engine. I'm guessing you are looking at salvage engines, rather than reconditioned, though I have bought brand new (not recon) engines with everything fitted.

A complete engine will be quicker to fit (so less labour to pay for) but you take a chance that the ancillaries are in good condition, and weren't damaged when the engine was removed.

Just scrap the car. It is never a good idea to spend money on a reconditioned engine on an old car.

As a previous poster said, why should you need a new engine? Do you think the garage telling you this might just want more business? Have you had a second opinion?

Is it the 1.9TD? If so head gaskets are a problem on those but they should never cause the rest of the engine to fail.

Mine went a while ago. I did it myself within a day and I'm no expert.
