I want to give up work to go to college

Hi

Just after a bit of advice.

I am 27 and have 2 kids. I work full time but would love to do an access to teaching course at college then go on to uni. I live in Scotland.

The thing is I really am not sure that we would survive financially. Does anyone know what I may be entitled to? OH earns around £23K pa.

TIA

which college are you thinking of attending? Your best bet is to contact them. I'm a mature student just about to finish an access to humanities course, however my access course is slightly different in that I do highers rather than the standard coursework that seems to be indemic of other access courses. I can't comment on your financial situation other than to say that I get a bursary of around £100 a week irrespective of any savings or income I have. As a single person I also do not pay council tax.

Are you able to do your access course in the evening - I know Abertay Uni's access course can be taken as a nightclass. Also have a look at Dundee Uni's access course - it's done all on line, whilst it's not a specific access to teaching course, it does give you a place at Dundee uni upon completion, and I from memory from UCAS applications of some of my fellow students they do a teaching degree.

If you really want to do it you will find a way. There have been students on my course with children, with the support of family they've got through the course okay, it's just down to you as to how determined you are to do a course irrespective of the money aspect.

my friends just done something similar but as a gym instructor and loves it. Your funding for student loans will be affected if you have been to uni before and if you already have a-levels/ some b-techs then you might not necessarily need to do an access course as its usually a catch up from a-levels with what i can gather.

go through this to check on what you could possibly get for student loans.

Best of luck with your application!

  • I done myself this myself a couple of years ago, I go to uni this year!

One thing I would say is go for it, it will be well worth it in the end.

    I also live in Scotland...

Depending on your circumstances you should be entitled to...

    -Your course fees paid for.
-A student loan which is around £5000

I currently work on average around 23 hours a week part time(more in summer etc) as well this gives me around £9000 a year.

So effectively I am earning around £14,000 as well as being at college.

The people at saas can help. https://www.saas.gov.uk give them a phone.

    Hope this helps.
