Buying and Selling nightmare continues...

What is wrong with the English system - it is such a nightmare to buy and sell! Why does it take an age to get through it! Just a rant really....
Basically my sale situation - 5/6 solicitors in the chain are ready. The last solicitor to be ready is second from the top in the chain - so both solicitors are ready either side of him. I have no idea what is outstanding - if anything! The bottom of the chain finally returns from holiday tomorrow to confirm the completion date but now the chain isn't ready. I am so frustrated with this solicitor who has been the most difficult to contact the whole time. His client has been speaking to the EA periodically and the last time said he would be ready early this week. Then the EA who was dealing with it has gone off leave...the EA who was then dealing with it has been called for jury service...the next EA is now off sick! It feels doomed yet so close. All we want is for him to say he is ready and there doesn't seem to be anything to delay it. The whole lack of communication is the worst thing. I ring the EA every day however we never get any closer.
Buying - the survey was supposed to be carried out three weeks ago. Just found out the surveyor wasn't qualified to carry out a home buyers report! So that is 3 weeks wasted and it has to be done again. Apart from peeing off my vendors this has caused delay - do you think I can ask for a discount?
The lease is also 83 years with my new purchase (if I ever get there) - wht do people think of this? I know that after 80 years the premium for extension increases but I want the flat for 3 years only and I want to move in asap.
Cheers guys for listening!
