Why such high increase in insurance???
I know the insurance premiums have been going up over the years but this takes the biscuit. Sister has been driving for over 10 years and has had no accidents/claims/offences etc. Last year her car insurance cover was for £330. This year she has been quoted over £1000. The insurance company says that the company she is insured with is going away from insuring cars hence the high premium to put people off. She went on a comparison website and the cheapest she can find is £520. We did expect a small rise in premiums but not as high as £190. Oh well no choice but to accept it
Problem with having access to internet is that i get asked by many to solve their problems Well at least i learn something on the way

Its always worth trying several difference comparision websites, they slightly differ!
Also visit Direct Line as they don't appear on comparision websites, and could be cheaper!"No likey no need to hit thanks button!":pHowever its always nice to be thanked if you feel mine and other people's posts here offer great advice:D So hit the button if you likey:rotfl:0 -
Insurance is getting pretty insane these days. I'm not looking forward to it in a few months time. My premium has come down every year since I started driving 9 years ago aged 17, but recently the decline has been getting less and less and less.
Finally managed to beat out a renewal of £300 with Direct Line last year though.
However, my girlfriend did have a bit of a result recently. Bearing in mind her particulars (2 claims - 1 at fault, brand new car, 19 years old, no no claims bonus) her renewal with Elephant came out at well over £1,500 (the exact figure escapes me now). After shopping around, upping her voluntary excess to £500, changing her job title (it's "technically" accurate.. *ahem*) and adding me to her policy, this dropped to just over £600 with Admiral !
Shop around and do try those not on comparison sites.Starting Debt: ~£20,000 01/01/2009. DFD: 20/11/2009 :j

Yes, unusual ,considering they are both owned by the same parent company.0

In a recession insurance usually goes up as investments by insurance companies lose value and they need to balance the books.
I don't know but I would have a suspicion that claims might increase in a recession- people less willing to just fix it out of their pocket?0 -
Admiral, One of the companies not paying out for losses due to airport closures.
Got to make me wonder if they would find excuses not to pay out on a car claim.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

No need to wonder, all insurance companies try as hard as they can not to pay out.....0 -

All Insurance companies are not the same, it is like any other product in that you often get what you pay for.
There are plenty of good Insurers but people generally buy on price alone.
As a previous poster mentioned there are some Insurers who immediately agreed to pay out on travel claims for the volcano. They technically could probably get away with not paying them but decided to pay them.
I know of plenty of other situations where a certain Insurer has paid a claim that is not covered. For instance I had a client whose young daughter was groomed and met a man from the internet. The police were involved and impounded her computer for evidence and subsequently destroyed it by mistake. The police would not pay for the replacement but the Insurer paid the claim even though it was specifically not covered as they felt it was the right thing to do.0 -
May also be worth the op trying Churchill as I don't think they appear on comparison sites.
Last year I got my second cheapest quote from them. The level of cover seems a lot better and best of all if your circumstances don't change (same car, no claims etc) the premium will be the same for the second year of insurance.0 -
Pays to shop around.
My renewal was £440 with direct line but Elephant would insure me for £319.
I got my car remapped then elephant wouldn't insure me at all. Ended up with RAC for £407 but was quoted £500 plus by several companies.

I'm with Elephant too, very cheap but will not allow any mods whatsoever (well, they do, but nobody in their right minds would pay). If you shop around for modified quotes you can get amazing deals. For turbo'ing my hot hatch taking it to 240bhp I was recently quoted only £40 more than I'm paying standard, and that's with unlimited mileage, ungaraged.
Reminds me, last year with Elephant I got a renewal for something like £390 when I was paying £290. So I went on a price comparison website and got a low quote of £300. From Elephant! So I rang them and said I'd got a quote for £300, how about matching it? They replied, OK, who's it from? I said, "You!" In other words they tried it on and got caught out.0
