Getting someone else`s bank stuff !!!

I recently started getting bank details for a new acount opened to my address by someone i have never heard of......since we have lived here over 5 years this is obviously wrong.....
Here goes with the fun part.... its a pin number so i ring... wait for it ............SANTANDER (AGAIN) and they are not interested and will not even take any details.
A week later its followed by the matching cash card so i ring again and they basically accuse me of being dodgy and lying.....they will not remove the address or even look at the account as i am not the acount holder.
Now i dont want to know anything about the account, i just want them to suspend the address and cancel the card. Sounds reasonable to me but they seem to think i need to take the stuff into a branch and explain myself
You would think they would be grateful that someone was being honest and maybe even ring the account holder to confirm the correct address to sort it but they will not even believe it despite giving them the account and card number.
Is there any way i can escalate a complaint as they think this is not an issue and should just shut up and accept it until the account holder complains and they (maybe) sort it out !!!
I used to have an accout with Abbey (Now Santander) and left because they could not manage a basic account in a satisfactory manner... and now this !!!
AAARRGRGGGHHHH !!!

I suggest you take the matter to the police, it's an issue of fraud, someone is using your address to setup a bank account, probably for money laundering - once you have the police involved it should get sorted fairly pronto.0

rmh99, why did you open mail not addressed to you? You should have marked the envelopes(s) ''return to sender - not known at this address'' & put it in the post box. You have got involved in something that you shouldn't have.0
-
the name on the front panel may not have been visible... regardless of whether that's true, I would definitely stick to that line unless you want to invite trouble in.0
-
Remember it is a criminal offence to open mail that isn't addressed to you. Thats why you just scribble out the address and put on it "return to sender - not at this address" Then Royal Mail will send the letter back to the address printed on the back of the envelope.
However, I did that the one time, the dozey sods re-posted the exact same letter back to me.BR 4/10/07

Not strictly true. Section 84 of the Postal Services Act 2000 states:Remember it is a criminal offence to open mail that isn't addressed to you.
"(3) A person commits an offence if, intending to act to a person’s detriment and without reasonable excuse, he opens a postal packet which he knows or reasonably suspects has been incorrectly delivered to him."
I've emblodened the bit which is important here.0 -

Ok, but I don't make the habit of opening another person's mail.BR 4/10/07

Royal Mail bosses are telling the staff to deliver to the address and not the person, which means that even if the postie knows its wrong he has to post it through.I have a deep burning indifference0 -

This happened to me a few years ago. The outcome was that a few new houses had been built on a piece of land in my street. I lived in number 3, and I was getting new bank details for the number 3 newly built house. Was something to do with new builds and postcodes not being recognised.0 -

Even if it is my handwriting on the envelope saying "Not at this address", that is posted back through the letter box? Hmm seems Royal Mail bosses live in cloud cuckoo land no wonder it's going to pot.BR 4/10/07

Try writing "refused" on it.Us posties are customers of Royal Mail as well and we regard it as unsafe practice,I dont want stuff going to my previous address.I have a deep burning indifference0
