solicitor and my deposit?

My solicitor rang me today to set an appointement , I don't know if we will sign anything because of the lease extention (the seller doesn't have the money to extend it, all is ready to do the extention and is willing to do it asap the completion is done).
The solicitor told me to come with passport and NIN.
He gave me the details of the solicitor bank account to transfert my 5% deposit (£6800), a transfert is better than a cheque for him.
As I take my mortgage with Nationwide I am not sure why I should transfert the money to my solicitor?, he is registered FSA so I trust him but better to have others opinions.

your solicitor will transfer the deposit to your seller's solicitor on exchange of contracts. That's why he needs the money. A transfer is better because it gives him cleared funds rather than waiting for a cheque to clear.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards.
