non refundable, non transferable deposit - but no singed contract

Options
basically i am fed up with the lack of communication and things being changed with regards to my wedding due to be new years eve 2010.
i paid a deposit of £1000 in january. as yet we have not received a receipt, we have not signed a contract or terms and conditions. we were told that the deposit is non refundable or transferable.
on the hotels website it clearly states that once a deposit has been received along with the two other signed documents - the wedding is guaranteed. due to the lack of communication, the chopping and changing of the details. we have asked to see the wedding co-ordinator, chasing her and have been told we have to wait another 3 weeks, which means it will only be 7 and half months to the wedding... we have written to her stating how we feel and have not really had a satisfactory response, we received a contract - on scrap paper with other peoples details on the back, she has put the minimum spend up £1000... so now we basically want to cancel the wedding at that hotel and get our deposit back....

do you think this will happen???

You picked the right day and the right forum to ask this question. read Beks thread, and think about how you are going to go about this. It can be done, but it may be a battle, but she was given very good advice at the beginning of her thread.

OMG!! It sounds like history repeating itself!!!!! ETA - just read you are in Worcestershire so obviously not the same venue as mine was but the start sounds all too familiar!!

As jackie says, it can be done but nothing is guarenteed.
From the start, you need to document everything. Send a letter (by recorded delivery) telling them about your concerns and you want to cancel (state your reasons very clearly) and give them a date by which to reply (seven working days usually good)
    .
Check out trip advisor for reviews too, you could find others have had the same experience.

Our case went to court and the owner never bothered to respond, it ended up with bailiffs but we got there eventually but not every case will be the same.

If you need any help, everyone on here has been fantastic for me.

You really could be me, 6 months ago. Definitely go there to speak to them .. if you still feel like you are being fobbed off then you need to start putting it into writing.
New years eve or not, you should have had a receipt by now. The very same thing that set alarm bells ringing for me.
Look up the supply of goods and service act and maybe speak to consumer direct, they were great for us on the phone (but they will tell you the same, to put everything in writing).
It seriously feels odd to give advice on the very day we received news that bailiffs had secured our money on an issue which started out the same as yours!! :o

Ignore people on your other thread - I have no idea why they reacted like that!!! Takes one to know one!!!
Keep everything you have and document everything in the future.
    Good luck tomorrow. :D

I was speaking to one of my legal friends about this subject this morning. His advice is that you send a recorded delivery letter to the manager of the hotel and try asking for your money back or at least asking for the correspondence relating to your wedding, it could be an oversight on their part especially if the wedding co-ordinator is uncontactable - they may be changing staff.

By paying the deposit it means that you have agreed the implied terms - those terms are available on the website, the brochure and whatever may have been discussed with you verbally. It will be difficult to get your money back although not impossible as in Beks case but her case is slightly different.

In the first instance you need to write to the hotel manager. Please can you PM me the venue details as I cover the Worcestershire area and want to make sure that the venue isnt on my books.

Ladies (and gents) always ask to see a copy of the terms & conditions, take them away with you and when you have read them then pay your deposit.
