Backpacker's travel insurance - please help

I am travelling to New Zealand for one year (or thereabouts). I leave the UK at the end of June, travelling to Auckland via Singapore (12hr stopover).

I'm just researching my travel insurance at the minute.

With most policies, it turns out that there are restrictions on the amount you can claim when your possessions are stolen.

The main problem here is that I will be taking my camera + lenses (£1000 worth ish) and my netbook (£250ish) as I will be able to get some photography work when I am away! However, I can't find any policies that will cover all of this.

I checked my content insurance so they only cover for the first 60 days. So, to cover these valuable possessions, I am going to use the 60 day cover from the content insurance and then take a NZ-based policy when I am out there.

This means I don't need much in the way of possessions cover with my insurance.

I've tried searching on travelsupermarket.com for insurance but I am getting stuck.

Can someone help out.

• When I select the dates, it doesn't allow me to select greater than 1 year's cover. This is useless to me as I leave in just over two months. I need covered now and I need the cover to last a year while I am in NZ ie 14 months Are policies for that length of time available?
• Also, what is the standard amounts for medical cover, cancellation cover etc? I had seen a table on this site before that gave an indication as to what level of cover we should have but I can't find it anymore.

I've seen such a wide range of prices for backpacker's travel insurance and I'm determined not to pay over the odds but I don't want to leave myself undercovered!

Try looking in one of the camera mags for specialist insurers, I had to do that, as my annual travel insurance wouldnt cover 5K of camera kit, In the end I went with JLT online, but there are others who will tailor cover to suit your needs.
