I am less delighted that you would deny me that choice.
All joking aside, look at the number of people who come on here and post how financially incompetent they are - missing payments dates, not understanding how the money has to reach the creditor by the due date. Losing 0% deals and this potential confusion because they can't manage their money.
I respect you choice to manage your money carefully, but judging from the sheer stupidity of some of these people, DD should be a requirement.0 -

Nah.... why should I suffer because of the stupidity of others? A requirement for "these people" perhaps.0 -

Unfortunately "these people" have proven how incapable they are, there must be 2 or 3 posts every week about how they cannot manage their accounts. Those who can are a rare number, I actually agree that you should be penalised however the lack of ability from others means that a DD for them is far more sensible.0 -

Well... people generally only post when they get into trouble, so the impression is a bit skewed.0 -

Sorry, you misunderstood me. A lot of these problems would be solved if DD was a requirement when taking out a card. Reading back the posts from other threads 9/10 times DD would solve the problem.

To be fair if people dont understand payment dates etc.. then they shouldnt get a credit card in the first place and DD's should be the last thing they are worrying about0 -

Yes, but the want it now society we live in today doesn't understand living without credit. It really should be taught that credit CAN get you into a lot of trouble. It can be a useful tool but only if you understand the obligations.
I agree, some people just shouldn't have a credit card, or 2 or 3 or 10.

Well we get a few threads on people getting confused when they make extra payments and get DDs taken anyway or don't know what will be taken. Then there was one where an OP cancelled his OP with the bank but not the CC company and then got a penalty for a failed DD. In the end, people either "keep up" with what's going on or they don't. My point is that on a forum such as this, problems are amplified because the many people that don't have a problem don't bother to post. Making DD a requirement would be a disproportionate reaction that would affect the silent majority.
IN FACT, if DDs were abolished and people HAD to check their statements and manually make a payment each month for credit cards, satellite TV subs, mobile phones etc., then perhaps they would be more in touch with what things really cost them. Come to think of it: abolish PAYE and make everyone pay over their tax each year. Perhaps then they'd be more aware of how much tax they pay and they'd be better at holding HM Government to account for its expenditure!0
