Is anyone else a moderator or owner of Freeshare, Freecycle, FreeEgle or any of that sort of group ?

Do you get rather peeved off when members (who incidently have been members for at least two years) submit messages wrong and then when you reject the message, they email the correct version to your private inbox so you have to email them again to tell them that they need to email that version to the group and not to you personally ?

Not to mention all the blooming sob stories you get emailed when you ask someone to offer an item to the group as they havent offered anything since 2007 and remind them that the group is about giving as well as taking

Starting to totally do my head in lately.

And ... strangely enough, had 5 members now that are sending spam mail to the group due to hackers in their account or virus on their pc.

Edit to add - am thinking bout adding a line to the bottom of any Moderator messages saying sumit along the lines of "please dont email me back, just resubmit your message to the group correctly and like you know you're supposed to"

I would gladly let one of the other two moderators for that group take the slack from me but there are two problems

Mod 1 - only visits group when she has something to offer or post a wanted message (and even then she posts, doesnt wait for it to show as pending and leaves the messages waiting)

Mod 2 - went on hols over xmas/new year, came back 1 feb, bearing in mind that we put her mail settings to "No Email" which for a mod means that you still get all the moderate emails (and she agreed to this as well). She hasnt been seen back on the group since she got back and said "Can I moderate again?" .. Err yeah, cos we never took you off moderating anyway

I think both Freecycle members and moderators are guilty of bad behaviour. I have had mostly good experiences on Freecycle but have had the occasional rude email from people wanting to collect my items and I have had to deal with over zealous, power tripping moderators. Thankfully we have a new mod on our group who is lovely and helpful and I appreciate that she gives up her time to make sure things run smoothly.

Maybe everyone would get on better on Freecycle if we keep in mind that the most important thing is that things are kept out of the landfill and stop getting caught up in petty arguments.

If I offered anything on freecycle, i would always check past posts to see if the member had offered stuff..it sometimes is an indication, BUT then I realised thats not always the case. I often respond to wanted requests, but unless the recipient namechecks me with a 'recieved from' thank you email in a digest, the mods, nor anyone else would know.

Being a mod must be very a difficult and time consuming job, but when I seen mods applying rules unfairly it upsets me.

I once put in a 'wanted' two weeks in a row by mistake, for two small items, the second request was not sent out and I was really chided via email by the mod and felt really ashamed.

Then I constantly see other members ask for multiple 'high value' (enough to furnish a whole house) items in one email, and thats accepted.

I agree with Chomsky, there are some freecycle members and some mods are guilty of bad behaviour.

Sound like you really care about what you do though Cally, if you are getting no support from the other mods can't you talk to the owner, recruit a couple of replacements if they dont pull their weight? It would be a shame for it to go down the swanny due to lack of support.

crieky lindos, your second message would have gone through fine on our groups, it's not a crime posting it two weeks running (it's when they posted it again after a day n half that annoys me)

thanks lindos :) I do care about it (been doing it for almost 2 years voluntary now). I've just fired email of to owner of groups requesting removal of the 2 mods that dont do owt and requesting asking mod of another local group be asked to help me out ... (she's the main mod for her area and i'm on her group as a kinda back up person/mod)

Since when did new members "have" to give their address out when joining the FreeEgle network ?

    Mind boggling stuff.
