 I cant get into the garden groove this year at all. After a long horrible winter, I was so looking forward to spring - but up here, it just hasn't sprung! Its a FREEZING cold north wind, we had some light snow yesterday and the forecast is for more snow tomorrow. The temp is 10C and the garden is just a waste of time. Nothing is growing but daffodils. I think I might forget it ....:(

I sympathise, because I'm getting most of my inspiration from the good weather here in the Midlands.I can't remember the last time it rained.

The wind is still bitter in the mornings though, and I recorded a temperature of 1°C last night in the greenhouse. Long way to go yet...
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

Don't give up, you will be out there when you feel a bit of warm sun on your back.
I never touch the garden in winter, too cold, but once I see buds, or some new leaves forming I am out there, I even like weeding, don't have a large garden mind. I live in North East England and everything seems later here, but the sun will come out eventually:)

Where in Scotland? I'm near Edinburgh and though yes, the growing season is always a couple of weeks later than down south and yes, spring is late this year anyway but....I've got plenty of stuff in the ground and already growing well, plus am beginning to move things from the propagators into my (unheated) greenhouse. Come the middle of May I'll have got most things out into the allotment.

Remember when it does finally warm up a bit we get more daylight up here in midsummer, so crops soon catch up.

I'm in the midlands too, and have to say, this beautiful weather has really increased the urge to be out there doing 'stuff'. Mind you, we were out doing anything we could even in February/March. Being our first proper garden in 11 years, nothing could keep us indoors, not even rain and snow :D

You will get the sunshine and be out there in no time I'm sure.

    Hello Folks

I live in Scotland as well and my garden is just a riot of colour at the moment... I love the different colours of daffodils that are growning... My photinia, Red Robin is starting to come into its own.. the flowering currant as well.. I have been working like a drudge in the greenhouse.. I actually had to take the chicken fillets out of the plastic tray so that I could plant seedlings into it.. I am so desperate for trays... Apart from my child-bearing hips and the watering can, there is not a spare inch of room at the moment... I also have 3 large cold frames on the go and I will get the hardier plants out of them at the beginning of next week so that I can start to take some plants out of the greenhouse.. I know it has been cold yesterday and tonight, but I just throw the fleece over everything and hope for the best.. I also make sure that the water in the watering can has been in the greenhouse for a few hours so that it isn't freezing when I water the young plants and seedlings... I have also got Kenyan beans started off in my conservatory as I like them... and some lettuce plants as well.. I have also got all my herb plants in the cold frame.. .. so we are not too far behind our greenfingered friends in the south...... Also, don't foget that we catch up as we have longer light... so get planting and enjoy....

    Cheers

As MR BE wrote, i can't remember the last time it rained either. Since my water butts are all but empty i wish we could at least have some overnight rain! The sunshine and reasonably warm weather here has certainly given me an incentive to get outside, so i can appreciate that the rather dour weather you are experiencing is having quite the reverse effect. I do hope things start picking up for you weatherwise and that you find a renewed interest in gardening once more.

Hiya Mardartha...dont think im as far North as you ..im more central Scotland,
but it realy is bitter cold..the water in our birdbath was frozen solid even at 9am,weather is forecast to be "minus degrees" tonight again..however,my brave kale seeds have managed to germinate and make an appearance(covered with poundland fleece)..not sure if my tomatoes/cucmbers are gonna survive in the plastic growhouse, but ive newer seedlings on my windowsill just in case.Is there anything you can start indoors...just to get you motivated again?,you know that feeling when a little seed pops up through the soil when you least expect it,thats whats keeping me going,or is that just because im new to all this?
Anyway, the better weather will return, and hopefully that will give you a wee boost.

I'm in southern Scotland but I'm 1000ft up and my garden is always a month behind everybody else. I have kale and lettuce and beetroot on trays in the spare room but even they arent coming on very fast - and I will lose them for sure if I put outside now. I have lost my rosemary, my lavender and my lilac, they are just black dust and dead. Hopefully be warmer soon but I think my oomph has gone !
