Can you download an album from the internet (such as via bittorrent) to your PC if you own a copy already on CD?

Any downloads from bittorrent are illegal. Why would you want to do that when you can just copy the songs from your CD to your PC?

The bittorrent format is not illegal James, but as it happens, 99.9% of illegal downloading sites use bittorrent to allow users to download illegally.

You got a source for that 'statistic' sugarcoma101 or did you just make it up in your head. There is loads of legally bittorrented stuff downloaded every day. Fact. There is also loads of illegally bittorrented stuff downloaded every day. Another fact. Don't just make up stats.
    My question:
Can we have official figures for how many people are employed by the 'British recording industry' and the 'European recording industry' as well as how many of these respective jobs are under threat from music piracy?
    Another question:
Have cassette tapes killed off the music industry yet?
And another, just for good luck - does the 'three strikes' rule apply to people downloading from darknets, and if so, how do you propose to find these people?!
Thanks for this opportunity MSE team!

Most linux distros must be illegal then.

  • I have been burgled and the laptop on which I had backed up my CDs has been stolen. Unfortunately and co-incidentally, my car was broken into shortly afterwards, and my CDs (but not the CD cases, which I still posses) were stolen.

Do I have the right to download the CDs? Am I right to think that as I have already paid for them, then I am the legal owner of the content, and that if anyone has stolen content from the industry that it is the burglar and the thief?

(NB to claim for the CDs on my car insurance would incur a huge excess, and increase my insurance premium, so it does not seem reasonable to do this if I do technically still own the content and have a right to download it).

But what about the grey areas, what if your listening to a radio station or streaming site like spotify/we7 and capture the stream to use on your mp3 player?

was recording the radio onto tape years ago illegal, i dont remember the media saying that was killing off the music industry

what about video and dvd recorders, isnt capturing a broadcast tv programme technically the same.
