Nowhere have I heard of Visa charging member banks a cash advance fee, as far as I can see, this is simply the bank gouging you for a few quid. (which would be evidenced by the fact Lloyds do you for a fiver rather than RBS/NW's £2)

It's the same cash advance fee you'll pay if you withdraw money from a cashpoint that isn't part of the LINK network. I'm fairly sure this is indeed a charge levied by Visa.
  • I've just had one of these after buying some Euros from the Post Office. Not impressed. I want my Maestro card back! I may as well have just withdrawn the money in France, given the £4.50 fee.

I contacted Natwest on the phone, the adviser told me it was a Post Office fee (incorrectly), and I've just been into a branch and they were not aware of the fee either, and have raised it as a concern for further investigation. Since finding these helpful posts, I'm now aware it is in the T&Cs, but surely if Natwest's staff aren't even aware of this change, I can't be expected to remember a leaflet I got through the post many months ago?

This charge should appear on the POS machine at the time of the transaction, and there should be an option to not continue with it - if this isn't technically possible, the charge should be withdrawn.

If Natwest don't refund the charge as a gesture of goodwill, I will move to a bank that issues Maestro cards!
