Planning Cottage Garden

I have just found this board and hope it's ok to ask for help in my first post!

I live in an end terraced house with a garden to the side/rear which has not had anything done to it for many years. Due to renovation of the house the garden has been neglected other than strimming and mowing when necessary and the lawn is in a bad condition with weeds/dandelions and is also very uneven. The approx size is 36ft x 12ft.

I love the look of cottage style gardens I have seen pictured but have absolutely no idea how to go about it i.e. suitable plants and design.

I would be grateful for any advice and tips to get me started:)
